The Promised Holy Spirit: Crank it Up a Notch God! Asking for Boldness in Times of Persecution – Part 1
Many times, when we face persecution for our faith, we are tempted to defend ourselves and our reputations through our words, actions, or even legal counsel. However, we learn from the disciples’ example that defending oneself was the last thing they did when faced with persecution and threats from those whose hands were still dripping with the guilt of killing the Son of God, Jesus. In times of persecution and threat, they prayed for God to amplify the very actions that had brought persecution upon them. It’s as if they prayed, “God, crank it up a notch,” because they sought boldness to further provoke their adversaries, or more accurately, the enemies of God. Be encouraged as you learn about their journey and the empowerment they received from the Lord, who shook the very place they were in and filled everyone with the Holy Spirit, enabling them to speak the Word of God with boldness.

The story of Phinehas, as recounted in the scriptures, starkly illustrates God’s view on sin and the lengths to which He will go to uphold righteousness among His people. In this message, Phinehas acted decisively against sin, reflecting God’s intolerance of wrongdoing and His demand for holiness among those who follow Him. This Old Testament account sheds light on the serious nature of sin and the extent of God’s commitment to eradicating it, setting a precedent for the ultimate act of love and redemption. The severity with which God views sin, demonstrated through Phinehas’ actions, underscores a consistent theme throughout biblical history: sin necessitates atonement. It is within this framework of understanding God’s righteous standards and His unyielding stance against sin that Easter, Resurrection Day, finds its profound significance.
Easter marks the culmination of God’s redemptive plan for mankind, a plan that required the ultimate sacrifice to address the grave seriousness of sin. In His infinite love and mercy, God sent His Son, Jesus, to live among us—a life marked by sinlessness and unwavering obedience to the Father. Jesus’ crucifixion was the pivotal moment in human history, underscoring the seriousness of sin and the extraordinary lengths to which God would go to reconcile humanity to Himself. By willingly enduring the cross, Jesus took upon Himself the weight of our sins, paying the price that we could never pay. His resurrection three days later signified victory over sin and death, offering hope and salvation to all of mankind. Easter, therefore, is not just a historical event but a cornerstone of faith that affirms God’s love for us—demonstrating that through Jesus’ sacrifice, redemption is possible for everyone who believes. It is a reminder that God’s stance on sin is unwavering, but so is His love for His creation, a love so profound that He would sacrifice His only Son to ensure our freedom from sin through faith, repentance, and eternal life with Him. -
