We are commanded by Jesus to love our enemies. When one first observes this commandment, one might think this is impossible. You may be tempted to think that God is wanting you to suffer since it can be so difficult to love one’s enemy. That could not be further from the truth for God is love. Hate is the opposite of love, and to hate is not to love. Hate is a destructive force, not to just the hated, but also the hater. Jesus calls us to love, even our enemies. Love is redemptive! Remember, it was love Himself that came to earth to show us His love, even while we were all enemies of God. He demonstrated how love is redemptive. For it is love, even loving our enemies which is the only hope for mankind, hope for our nation, hope for the world and God has called us, sent us to be ambassadors of His redemptive love. This message is excerpted from the message delivered by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. entitled, “Love Your Enemies.” What Christian American would have more authority to speak on such a vitally important command to us who follow Jesus?
