Sex Trafficking Capital of the World Tenancingo, Mexico? What You can Do to end this Atrocity

There is a growing concern regarding the reality of sex trafficking and sex slavery that is occurring in the world. Reportedly, there are more slaves in the world today than there has ever been. What if the sex trafficking activity that is taking place in America could be traced back to one single city? To those in the anti-slavery industry, Tenancingo, Mexico is known as the “sex trafficking capital of the world.”Many cities across the globe are known for the products that are created or the “industry” that is most affected.

When CNN’s Rafael Romo personally went to Tenancingo to find out what the story was on the ground, he was surprised as to what he found. After repeated attempts to meet with the city’s mayor, their attempts proved futile. “We were denied and warned to stay close to the town square. By late afternoon, the tension we felt became more palpable. We’d been warned of the dangers that journalists faced in this town.” When two church officials approached Romo, you would think a more desired outcome would occur. What takes place will shock you.

If the realities are not heart breaking enough, the atrocities continue when you hear the story from one who was trafficked for four years. At just 12 years old, she had no idea what would transpire when an older man approached her. By age 16, Karla calculates, she was raped more than 43,200 times.Karla has since been rescued from sex trafficking, but, during those four years she endured hell.

Being educated about the realities and atrocities that are taking place every day in our world, is not the end, it is only the beginning. We must be moved with compassion in order to respond with action. What can we do? Where does one start? Operation Underground Railroad targets individuals and trafficking rings to not only rescue those being trafficked, but also to bring justice to those who are enslaving others.  As the Church, we can pray, we also can inform others spreading awareness of sex trafficking. Hear the entire report of what is taking place in Tenancingo, the effects of lives who also have escaped the trafficking nightmare, and so much more.
