Some may remember the movie, “Jaws” and the horrible events that took place resulting from shark bites. Today, tragedies are all around us, and happen each and every day. No one doubts the danger of a shark attack, but there appears to be a new killer that is more dangerous than shark attacks. According to New York Post, “More people die from selfies than shark attacks”. Ten years ago, the “selfie” was a term nobody knew. But today, used every day by many.
The New York Post reports that there were, “eight confirmed shark-related deaths” for 2015. But, compare that to the number of deaths caused by people taking a “selfie”, and you get a much larger amount. Just in 2015, alone, the Wikipedia page dedicated to selfie stick related injuries and deaths is 23. These occurrences have been recorded as far back as August of 2010. Imagine that the last thing someone does before their death is to be focusing on themselves. 2 Timothy 3:1-5 talks about the very days that we are living in, “But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.” It matters what we focus on, and what we live for in our lives.
