“We Must Reject Any Forms of Fundamentalism” says President Obama. What does that even mean? What is a Fundamentalist?

by

LISTEN NOW! When we see, and hear things being said in the media, or more specifically by those in leadership, we may not fully understand what is being said. But, it is imperative that we do. Case in point is the recent speech given by President Obama at the United Nations General Assembly.

When addressing the General Assembly, the President stated, “We must reject any forms of fundamentalism”. Hillary Clinton also stated, “Deep-seated cultural codes and religious beliefs…have to be changed.” Without an understanding of what fundamentalism is, we may overlook these very statements. Per dictionary.com, fundamentalism is ”a form of a religion, especially Islam or Protestant Christianity, that upholds belief in the strict, literal interpretation of scripture.”

We must connect the reality that fundamentalism is simply holding to a Biblical World View; basing our decisions, values, and morals based on what is in plainly laid out in the Bible. George Barna’s new book, America at the Crossroads, addresses the current state of the Church and how different the world would be if everyone had a Biblical World View. According to Barna, there are very few Christian fundamentalists in America.

Presently, many are making decisions thinking that life does not matter, not taking into consideration God’s point of view of life. Kenneth Copeland, Pastor George Pearsons, Bishop Keith Butler, and David Barton discuss the reality of this important truth. When we begin to look at each of the platforms for this upcoming Presidential Election, whether it be, Democratic, Libertarian, Republican, or Green, we can see the clear defining lines that each makes about the matter of life. As Pastor Pearsons reads directly from the Democratic Platform, “We will appoint judges who defend the Constitutional principles of liberty and equality for all and will protect women’s rights to safe and legal abortion”. He continues to read from the Democratic Platform, “We will fight Republican efforts to roll back the clock on women’s health and reproductive rights and stand up for Planned Parenthood…Democrats are committed to protecting and advancing reproductive health, rights, and justice…” As Pastor Pearsons continues to read, Barton that highlights the reality of the issue, “Cause when you vote you’re signing your name to this contract.” The contract that Barton is referring to is the very platform that the party stands on that someone votes for; in this case, the Democratic Platform. We cannot blindly vote for a candidate or a party. God will hold us accountable for our decisions, including the ones for elections.

If we do not understand what the Bible teaches about these issues how will we know what decisions we need to make? As Bishop Butler points out, “We’re talking about this subject as though people know what the Scripture says about this and feel about it the way Scripture says about it.” He continues, “Most Christians that I know today, cannot tell you why abortion is wrong and they don’t necessarily believe that abortion is wrong”. Barton adds to his point,

“The reason we have abortion in America today is not because of the Supreme Court and its not Planned Parenthood. 76% of Protestants do not want to see Roe v Wade overturned. 600,000 abortions a year are performed on professing Christians; 200,000 on born again Christians. It’s Christians that keep the abortion business going.”

The urgency of the events being discussed could not be greater and continue to get elevated in our hearts and our consciences when we begin to see them from a Biblical World View and not simply based on a political party, and especially not from a preference. We must begin to value life and see life from the viewpoint of God. When we do, it will not only change our decision making, but it will also effect who we elect into the leadership over our nation. See the impact of this entire discussion and so much more.
