CHILLING WARNING! “Artificial Intelligence Can Start a War…It Must Be Regulated”, says Elon Musk to Governors of America

by

LISTEN NOW! (Or WATCH FULL PROGRAM!) We are on the cutting edge as the exponential development of technology will soon be replacing many jobs. Presently, more than 1 billion people are sharing many details of their life on Facebook. Facebook’s founder, Mark Zuckerberg, has boldly proclaimed that in the next 5 to 10 years, Facebook will exceed the abilities of humans. Zuckerberg recently spoke at Harvard University’s Commencement and he spoke about his thoughts on the graduating class, their need to establish a sense of purpose for everyone, and how Facebook can help accomplish this.

“I’m here to tell you that finding your purpose isn’t enough. The challenge for our generation is to create a world where everyone has a sense of purpose.” As Zuckerberg explains, purpose is simply understanding that your life is part of something bigger. He continues, “When your parents graduated, that sense of purpose reliably came from your job, your church, your community. But today, technology and automation are eliminating many jobs…a lot of people are feeling disconnected, and depressed, and trying to fill a void in their lives.”

It’s exciting to see Zuckerberg having the focus of wanting to use the company that he has built to empower this next generation. But, the question is, what is Facebook doing with all the data that more than 1 Billion people are uploading and posting to Facebook each day? This information doesn’t simply disappear. When we consider the possibilities of how this information could be used, we turn to Elon Musk and his recent comments about Artificial Intelligence (AI) when speaking to the Governors of America.

Governor Hickenlooper, of Colorado asked Musk about his take on how governors can respond to AI. ‘I think one of the roles of government is to ensure the public good, and that the dangers to the public are addressed….The first order of business would be to try and learn as much as possible, to understand the nature of the issues…’ As Musk describes the incredible rate that AI is learning, he points to a game where AI developers thought it would be 10 to 20 years before a computer would beat the best player in this game. Now, a computer is not only crushing the best player of this game, it can play the top 50 best players, and crush them all at the same time. As Musk genuinely points out, “that pace of progress is remarkable”. With this is in mind, Musk shares how this can affect the AI industry. “You’re going to see robots that can learn to walk from nothing, umm within hours. Way faster than any biological being”. As alarming as this is, this isn’t even the tip of the iceberg.

‘The thing that is the most dangerous…is the deep intelligence in the network’. Musk continues to express the hypothetical possibilities of these “deep intelligence”. ‘Well it could start a war; by creating fake news, spoofing email accounts, and fake press releases and just by manipulating information. The pen is mightier than the sword.” The real world hypothetical situation that Musk begins to describe is scary at best, as he begins to describe an actual world event that could have easily been implemented by AI when you begin to understand its capabilities.

Understanding both Zuckerberg and Musk is crucial to understand. As a young, excited entrepreneur, Zuckerberg sees the optimistic opportunities of friends connecting and information being passed faster than ever conceived. On the flip side, Musk reveals the dangers of this exponentially growing technology that governors must learn how to regulate. If the simple awareness of this technology weren’t alarming enough, Musk has further warnings for our governors.

“Well, I think the first order of business would be to gain insight. Right now, the government does not even have insight.” Musk begins to lay out a step by step procedure of what governors can do regarding understanding the AI industry to establish the needed regulations. But, he re-emphasizes, the first priority, is insight. “Once there is awareness, people will be extremely afraid”. This in itself is a sign of the times. We cannot turn to technology or government. We need to turn to God. We need to know God personally.

As we begin to understand the mounting concern of this AI, from Musk’s perspective, we can further understand some of the additional comments that Zuckerberg shared at Harvard’s Commencement. Zuckerberg begins to list three ways where the graduating generation can “create a world where everyone has a sense of purpose”.

Zuckerberg begins to address his thoughts, point by point; “by taking on big meaningful projects together, by redefining equality so everyone has the freedom to pursue their purpose, and by building community all across the world”. Zuckerberg shares from his own journey as he encourages young minds with ideas to endure opposition and criticism. He concludes his points by describing some of the problems that our world faces today. “How about stopping climate change before we destroy the planet, and getting millions of people involved installing solar panels? How about curing all diseases and getting people involved by asking volunteers to share their health data, track their health data, and share their genomes?” Zuckerberg has ideas for how elections are done as well. “How about modernizing democracy so everyone can vote online. And how about personalizing education so everyone can learn?”

As Zuckerberg continues through his ideas to solve global problems, he points to creating a culture that inspires creativity and the freedom to fail. This is very true, but the question is how do we create this culture. He points to the subjects that were addressed in generations past, and how this generation has their issues that must be addressed.

“Previous generations fought for the vote and civil rights. They had the new deal, and great society; and now it’s time for our generation to define a new social contract.”Zuckerberg continues to elaborate what that project is. “We should have a society that measures progress not just by economic metrics, like GDP, but by how many of us have a role that we find meaningful. We should explore ideas like universal basic income to make sure that everyone has a cushion to try new ideas.”

It is a wonderful idea to create a culture where people believe they are free to create and try new ideas. But, is the best approach through universal based income? This is simply the idea of giving labor to the government and receiving back a pre-determined amount of income to all of society. This is Revelation 13 being played out before our eyes. Yes, we need to build community in our culture. But, the Church needs to see the urgency of this need and rebuild community with others, not simply through ideas from social media. When we look at Revelation 13, we can see how it’s being built and established right now, in present time.

Right now, the Church has gotten away with not having community, but this present form of thinking will not suffice in the days ahead. We don’t need Mark Zuckerberg seeking to organize the Church to build community, we need to return to community ourselves; return to relationship with one another, return to family. The realities of AI cannot be understated, we must understand how technology is effecting the world that we live in.
