Today we celebrate Independence Day in America! What is July 4th all about? David Barton with Wallbuilders, shares about what led up to Independence Day. There were many battles and raids where the British attempted to take our freedom. “Despite our many efforts to reconcile with Great Britain… time that finally arrived where the founding fathers no longer had any good options left for them. So, in the Continental Congress on June 7th, 1776, Richard Henry Lee made the following famous proposal that Congress approve a resolution declaring quote, ‘That these united colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent states.’ Now Congress did not immediately act on his motion to separate from Great Britain.” A few days later though Congress did appoint several of America’s founding fathers: Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman and Robert Livingston. These men were asked to write a statement as to why the colonies were seeking independence. This resolution passed because not one state voted against it. On July 4th, 1776 Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence. Once this was done the appointed men, John Adams, Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson set into motion in making a seal for the new nation. John Adams description of the seal is, “Children of Israel in the wilderness, led by a cloud by day, and a pillar of fire by night. Moses lifting his wand and dividing up the sea and Pharaoh and his chariots overwhelmed with the waters. And this motto: Rebellion to tyrants is obedience to God.” Within 24 hours copies of the Declaration of Independence was dispersed amongst the newly freed country and people were rejoicing. It took about eight weeks altogether to produce and complete the Declaration of Independence.
David continues sharing how John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail concerning this new declaration. “Yesterday the greatest question was decided, which ever was debated in America, and a greater perhaps never was nor will be decided among men. A resolution was passed without one dissenting colony that these united colonies are and of right ought to be free and independent states. You will see in a few days a declaration setting forth the causes which have impelled us to this mighty revolution, and the reasons which will justify it in the sight of God and man.” He then predicted what future generations would do on Independence Day. “I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding generations, as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the day of deliverance by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shews, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations from the end of this continent to the other form this time forward forever more.” John predicted what now continues 236 years later as we celebrate every year with parties, festivals, fireworks, and much more! Also, we need to remember how God graciously set America free and has allowed us to stay a free nation to this day! Let us not forget where we have come from and always to give God the glory. We pray you have a blessed Independence Day and we hope to hear from you! Also shared in this segment: Rights, Grateful, President Donald Trump, Power, Judiciary, Executive, Legislature.
