As Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, stresses the long history of the relationships between Israel and the United States to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) audience, it’s important to see just how far back these principles go. For some, it is recognized that America was founded on Judeo-Christian values. It actually goes much further back. Nearly 300 years prior to the signing of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. In 1492, an explorer was given the funds to find a new land for the Jewish people to escape oppression. His name: Christopher Columbus. When George Washington was nearing depletion of his supplies and his resources during the American Revolutionary war, he was in desperate need of funds to support his needs. His answer was a Jewish man, Haym Salomon, to raise the needed funds in order the outfit the troops to carry out the needed battles to ultimately win the war. Nearing the end of his death, when asked how Salomon wanted to be remembered; he ask not for himself to be remembered, but his homeland, Israel to be remembered. By looking at a single dollar bill, you will be surprised at how we still remember what Haym Solomon did. In 2011, the Washington Monument suffered more than 150 cracks in its stone because of the Virgina Earthquake. The restoration needed to repair the damages was $7.5 million. Who finance such a work? America found help and support from the hands of Israel. Philanthropist David Rubenstein, provided all of the funds that were needed and the Washington Monument still stands. The history of America is truly amazing as we see more and more the common thread of the relationship with our Jewish brothers and sisters. Having an Abandoned Heart after God
In these increasing days of darkness, it is so easy to become caught up into all the evil that is taking place across the world. For some, it is easier to simply shut down, to turn off, and turn away. Or, we can seek after God and put our trust in Him. In John 8:12, Jesus said, “I am the light of the world”. Amidst darkness, we can choose the light. As we look through those who God used powerfully, often times, we focus on their boldness and the tenacity of their actions for the gospel; yet we disconnect the process that took place in order for them to get there. Peter was a man that was used powerfully to deliver the message upon the birth of the church where 3,000 came to Christ upon his words. Peter was also the man that denied Jesus; 3 times. What happened in the process? Peter came face to face with his own heart. He had a choice to make.
Paul was another man that was used mightily for the Kingdom. His very hands penned the majority of the New Testament. Book after book written to the churches throughout the land, he wrote from prison. How does that happen? Before Paul was Paul, he was first Saul; “a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man”, as he describes himself in 1 Timothy 1:13. When Saul was on the road to Damascus, he witnessed the brightness of Jesus that caused him to go blind. In one moment, he saw the fullness of who God is, and the fullness of who he was. He was a changed man. He had an abandoned heart.
If we believe that we are any different than Saul, we missed it. We are all lost in our sins if we are apart from Christ. There is no gray area. When we come to Christ, we are made new. If we want to do what Paul did, we must first be willing to see what Saul saw. Will we allow the Holy Spirit to reveal our own hearts to us in order for God to use us in the fullness that He desires? Allow your hunger and tenacity to search out the goodness of God to be greatly stirred and so much more.
