LISTEN NOW! or WATCH FULL PROGRAM! There is much coming against The Church right now. But, this does not contradict our command to love others, and to love our enemies. In John 17:23b, Jesus said, “Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.” We are known by our love. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a wonderful demonstration of a life lived out in love through the most vehement and evil hatred.
Dr. King experienced some of the most religious hatred during his days fighting for civil rights. One particular image captures him and his son standing on the front lawn of their home, while reaching down to remove a burnt cross staked in the grass. His love did not waiver. He also faced opposition from law enforcement as he was attempted to be choked with his own tie.
His sister-in-law, Naomi, recounts the event when Dr. King came home after leaving the police station. She shares, remembering the exchange with Dr. King, “I was detained at the police station, and you know what ‘Nene’, they tried to choke me to death with my own tie.”Responding with tears, Naomi was speechless. She continues to share how Dr. King resolved to ultimately respond, “But, you know what, the more that they mistreat us, and the more that they abuse us, that’s the more that we’ve got to love them and forgive them because hatred is very much alive and we’ve got to love them.
When Dr. King walked the streets, he first made all of those who walked with him sign a commitment card, comprised of 10 commitments that revealed an understanding of what this movement was all about. Just a look at what comprised these commitments reveals so much of what this man was all about, and where his personal values came from.
I hereby pledge myself—my person and body—to the nonviolent movement. Therefore, I will keep the following ten commandments:
