When we see how quickly Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing in our culture, some are looking at these advancements with high hopes, others are taking considerable pause. Elon Musk, founder of Space-X, and co-founder of PayPal, is one of those looking at the development rate of technology with concern. When he recently spoke with America’s governors, he shared some alarming words in response to their many questions.
“I have exposure to the most cutting-edge AI…and I think people should be really concerned about it. I keep sounding the alarm bell, but until people see, like, robots going down the street killing people, they don’t know how to react.” Musk continues to point out how we should be responding to AI. “I think we need to proactive in regulations, instead of reactive.” As Musk elaborates, if we wait to act in a reactive manner, it will be too late. His following comments underscore why he feels so strongly that the AI industry needs to be regulated. “AI is a fundamental risk to the existence of human civilization.”
When we look at the addition to robots to our culture, in a greater way than they are now, we may not understand how we will be effected. But, Musk shares insight in a way that everyone can understand. “Robots will be able to do everything better than us…this is really like the scariest problem to me.” With Musk’s entrepreneurial background and business sense, he understands the intense competition that leading businesses can have with one another. If a company decides not to pursue advancements in AI, it is only a matter of time before they are destroyed by their competitors. This in itself causes every player in the AI industry to pursue advancements simultaneously. This is shouting the outcry for government regulation to be implanted.
It’s important to remember that Musk is an extremely intelligent man, and has seen developments in AI that many would never dream of. His understanding of AI will be smarter than him!
