IOT? Code Word For What Will Take Over Our Daily Lives? The Internet of Things, IOT: What is it? What does it mean to your present and future? Does this lead to the Mark of the Beast?
Today, most of us use the internet every single day. With the click of a button and the tapping of our fingers on our keyboard, the internet seems to seamlessly show imagery after imagery. What we may not know is the inter-connection of fiber optic wires stretching through oceans bridging continents together, that allow these “instant” images and webpages to appear when we hit “enter”. Imagine that type of travel happening in a single second. We use the internet so much and don’t think twice to consider the speed at which it is operating.
A new term that is beginning to be heard more and more is the ‘Internet of Things’, or “IOT”. We have smart phones, smart TVs, and smart cars, but do we realize the impact of how more and more “devices” are being connected to the internet? In this technological age, businesses are streamlining their inventory, processing time is being cut short and short, and for consumers, desired results are also being experienced with less delays. Reportedly, there are now more devices connected to the internet than there are people. It just seems so nice and convenient.
Because of this explosive growth of technology, we are finding ourselves in a drastically different culture than what existed just a few centuries ago. IBM captures this changing environment with these words, “…We have seen the emergence of a kind of global data field. The planet itself, natural systems, human systems, physical objects, have always generated an enormous amount of data, but we didn’t used to be able to hear it, to see it, to capture it. Now we can because all of this stuff is now instrumented, and it’s all interconnected so we can have access to it.” IBM reveals a stunning reality that we may not be aware of, but we are reliant on many of the monitoring systems that are in place in order to make the needed decisions across a multitude of industries. Just by looking at how we travel, we can see how much we look at the coordinates of GPS to tell us where we are, where we are going, and where the next turn is; whether this travel is by foot, by taxi, or by railway, as IBM said, “It’s all interconnected.”
The disturbing truth in this existence is what our leaders have to say about this, ‘Internet of Things.’ Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security said, “We will collaborate with Underwriters Laboratory and others to develop a Cybersecurity Assurance Program to test and certify networked devices with the Internet of Things—such as your home alarm system, your refrigerator, or even your pacemaker.” With these advancements of technology and statements such as this, we can see how literally, everything, can be monitored. The downside of this is the vulnerabilities that this “access” also brings. What is now being termed as “War driving”is the act of criminals simply driving down a populated residential area with specific gadgetry that also can “access”, say your “smart lock” that controls your front door.”
The book of Nehemiah reveals a powerful truth to where we are now. Nehemiah 9:37 reveals, “Because of our sins, its abundant harvest goes to the kings you have placed over us. They rule over our bodies and our cattle as they please. We are in great distress.” America is still a land of laws that is in the U.S. Constitution. Within this Constitution is the 4th Amendment which states, “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.”There is wisdom that must be sought after and reached in order to respond in these changing environments.
