How to Get Wisdom, Knowledge, and Understanding
A Wisdom Moment from Proverbs 2:1-6
Everyone wants wisdom.
We want to understand our marriages, our families, our children, our churches, our neighbors, our nation, and the circumstances surrounding our lives. Yet many people search everywhere except where God says wisdom is found.
Proverbs 2:1-6 gives us God’s simple but profound roadmap for receiving wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. Rather than offering shortcuts, Solomon lays out a process that requires an intentional pursuit of God.
The good news is that God is not hiding wisdom from us. He is inviting us to seek Him so He can generously give it.
The Foundation: Accept God’s Word
Proverbs begins with the first and most important step:
“My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you…” (Proverbs 2:1, NIV 1984)
Everything starts with accepting God’s Word.
Before wisdom can transform our lives, we must first believe that God’s Word is true and submit ourselves to it. This is why Jesus commanded His followers to make disciples by teaching people to obey everything He commanded (Matthew 28:19-20).
You cannot build your life on wisdom you refuse to accept.
God’s wisdom begins with surrender.
Store Up God’s Commands
After accepting God’s Word, Solomon tells us to store it up.
This goes beyond simply reading the Bible occasionally. God’s Word is to become part of us. We continually fill our hearts with Scripture until it shapes the way we think, speak, and live.
Jesus taught that “the mouth speaks what the heart is full of” (Matthew 12:34). Whatever fills our hearts eventually comes out through our words and actions.
Some call this memorization. Others simply call it soaking in God’s Word.
Either way, God’s truth becomes our internal treasure.
Turn Your Ear Toward Wisdom
Wisdom requires listening.
Solomon says to “turn your ear to wisdom.”
Many people have religious experiences, attend church, or complete spiritual routines without truly listening for God’s voice. God calls His people to hear what He is saying and to respond with obedient hearts.
Wisdom comes to those who intentionally incline their ears toward God.
Apply Your Heart to Understanding
Knowledge alone is not enough.
God calls us to apply our hearts to understanding.
Scripture repeatedly teaches that blessing comes to those who become doers of the Word, not merely hearers. Understanding grows as we practice what God has revealed.
Obedience transforms information into wisdom.
Call Out for Insight
Next, Solomon tells us to use our voices.
He says to call out for insight.
Seeking wisdom is not passive. God invites His children to ask Him for understanding, believing that He delights in answering those who seek Him sincerely.
Prayer is part of God’s process for growing in wisdom.
Cry Aloud for Understanding
There are moments when casual prayers are not enough.
Solomon says to cry aloud for understanding.
Throughout the Psalms, David repeatedly cried out to God during seasons of overwhelming difficulty. Whether surrounded by enemies, facing impossible situations, or feeling completely overwhelmed, David called upon the Lord.
God answered him.
There are times when brokenness becomes the doorway to divine understanding.
Look for Wisdom Like Silver
God also tells us to involve our eyes.
We are instructed to look for wisdom.
Instead of walking blindly through life, we begin to observe God’s hand everywhere around us. Romans teaches that creation itself reveals the Creator. As believers grow in their walk with Christ, they begin recognizing God’s wisdom displayed throughout everyday life.
The more we see life through God’s perspective, the more discernment increases.
Search for Wisdom Like Hidden Treasure
Finally, Solomon tells us to search.
Not casually.
Not occasionally.
Diligently.
Most people want quick answers, simple bullet points, or easy solutions. But God compares wisdom to hidden treasure.
Treasure is valuable enough to pursue.
Those who truly desire God’s wisdom continually search His Word, pray, meditate, ask questions, and seek His direction.
A hungry heart searches until it finds.
God’s Promise to Those Who Seek Him
After giving this remarkable checklist, Solomon gives an incredible promise:
“Then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” (Proverbs 2:5-6, NIV 1984)
God is the source of all wisdom.
He possesses every answer we need.
The question is not whether God has wisdom.
The question is whether we are willing to pursue Him according to His instructions.
When we accept His Word, treasure it in our hearts, listen carefully, apply what we learn, cry out in prayer, search diligently, and pursue Him wholeheartedly, God promises that we will find the knowledge of God and receive the wisdom that only He can give.
A Simple Checklist for Receiving God’s Wisdom
Proverbs 2:1-6 gives us a practical path:
- Accept God’s Word.
- Store up His commands.
- Turn your ear toward wisdom.
- Apply your heart to understanding.
