Greg and Pat begin a conversation seeking an understanding of community organizing and exploring the possibility that not only is America being organized, but the world is simultaneously. Greg speaks about how he too, like President Obama, and Marshal Ganz used to be a Community Organizer and was part of the PICO National Network of community organizers and attending a community organizing meeting with PICO and organizers around the nation. [Find out more about his experience with PICO and as a community organizer.] Marshal Ganz, who quotes from a book that is dedicated to Lucifer, Satan, tells Bill Moyer on the Bill Moyer & Company on PBS that he was part of the political campaign for President Obama and helped him with organizing, but he also explains his long history of helping so many out who were experiencing injustice. Ganz reveals also where the nation shifting words of “YES WE CAN!” came from, as well as what movement building is like. Most of all Ganz, opens the door for what Greg will be sharing on the next program about the Saul Alinsky’s “Rules for Radicles” who speaks of how a community organizer has to polarize people, creating tension, “conflict.”
Organizers have to be well-integrated schizoids, because you have to polarize to mobilize and depolarize to settle. But without polarizing you’re never going to mobilize anything. And yeah, THEN there’s a time to negotiate…”(1)
