Nathan Morris, with Shake the Nations, and Eric Gilmour, with Sonship International, share how people can become blind to Jesus’ face! Some may think that a believer can’t be blind to Jesus’ face, but with all the distractions in the world, it is actually very easy for that to happen.
Nathan asked Eric that specific question, how do we become blind to the face of Jesus? This is important for us to examine ourselves and ask, ‘Am I blind to the face of Jesus?’ God can open our eyes to see when we ask Him. The Lord spoke to the Church in Laodicea saying that they were blind.
“You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.” Revelation 3:17
We understand by this that we can be blind to Jesus, which is being deceived. Deception is what we think we are doing is right when in the eyes of the Lord we are completely wrong. In his book, The Fear of the Lord, John Bevere writes, “The longer someone is deceived, the thicker the veil of deception gets, the harder it is to convince them they are deceived.” Being deceived is a very dangerous place to be in because that makes us blind to hearing from the Lord and seeing what He wants us to see! Anyone can be deceived as Jesus spoke of in the book of Matthew, and He says to be careful because even the elect can be deceived!
Eric answers the question and helps point out how if we have become blind to Jesus, we can rediscover our first love again! He shares from his own life experiences, “I fail to see Him when I add to Him. The more additions the more is subtracted. So, if I stay set, fixed upon Him and Him alone then I am in simplicity and in rest. The more I start to add to Him, the more I am unable to see Him.”
He says it is like Paul’s cry, “For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.” Eric continues, “He [Paul] was fearful about one thing, that they would add to the simplicity of Jesus, and this is the sole legitimate fear of the apostle. Don’t add to Jesus.” Paul voiced his concern in his letter to the Corinthians, “But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.”
Eric continues sharing that even good additions to Jesus can steal our attention away from Jesus. Maybe you have been wandering aimlessly and are burnt out, asking yourself, ‘What is wrong with me?’ Maybe you have become blind to Jesus and left your first love?
There may be things in our life that don’t need to be there that are distracting us from God and stealing our attention. If the enemy can’t take you out because you love the Lord, he will try to put so much on you that you get to the point where you crash from the burden of all those things that you are not meant to carry! Jesus said, His burden is light not heavy. You can be free when you make that decision to focus on Jesus and Him alone! It is Jesus that leads us through the storms in life.
Paul expressed what we all should be focusing on,
“I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 3:10-14
We should have an abiding relationship with Jesus Christ which will keep our focus on Jesus. When we start thinking earthly goals instead of heavenly goals that is when our gaze moves away from Jesus. We can get more concerned about how other people see us versus how Jesus sees us. We can shape our life in a way that allows us to keep our focus on Jesus and one way is to have an abiding relationship with Him! If you need a plan on how you can start that or go deeper in your abiding relationship you can get your free plan at iAbide HERE. We want to help you start your abiding journey today by gazing on the face of Jesus Christ!
We want to hear from you! How have distractions caused you to be blind to Jesus? What are some ways that have helped you to keep your gaze on Jesus? Write to us at [email protected] or in the VFNKB Community HERE. Greg shared in this segment.
