Five Things We Will Learn
- Why God warns His people against every form of ill-gotten gain, not just outright theft.
- How dishonest business practices harm both the victim and the one who profits from them.
- Why God values integrity in business far more than wealth gained through deception.
- How modern examples such as predatory lending, hidden contracts, and gambling reveal the timeless relevance of Proverbs 1.
- Why trusting God as our Provider frees us from the temptation to profit at the expense of others.
God’s First Warning About Wealth
One of the first major lessons in the book of Proverbs concerns money, but not simply the desire to have it. God specifically warns against ill-gotten gain, wealth acquired through sinful, dishonest, or oppressive means.
Proverbs 1:10-19 paints a vivid picture of sinful people enticing others to join them. Their goal is simple: enrich themselves regardless of who gets hurt. Solomon writes:
“My son, if sinful men entice you, do not give in to them…” (Proverbs 1:10)
The invitation sounds appealing. They promise shared wealth, valuable possessions, and easy profit. Yet underneath the promise lies violence, exploitation, and destruction.
God immediately tells His people not even to begin walking down that path.
Ill-Gotten Gain Isn’t Always Violent
While Proverbs describes robbery and bloodshed, the principle reaches much farther than criminal acts.
Today, someone may never physically rob another person, yet still build wealth by taking advantage of others.
A business deal can become ill-gotten gain when it intentionally deceives people.
Before entering any business arrangement, every follower of Christ should honestly ask questions such as:
- Is this legal?
- Is it honest?
- Are people being taken advantage of?
- Am I charging unfair or excessive prices?
- Will this person be genuinely helped when this transaction is complete?
- Would I willingly disclose every detail if they asked?
Many business opportunities sound exciting until honest questions are asked.
God’s wisdom reminds us that how money is earned matters just as much as how much money is earned.
Integrity Is More Important Than Profit
Modern culture often excuses unethical behavior by saying,
“It’s just business.”
God never separates business from righteousness.
A Christian employer, salesperson, lender, contractor, or investor is still accountable to God for every decision made in the marketplace.
If contracts intentionally hide important details…
If fine print is used because someone probably will not read it…
If information is withheld simply to close a sale…
Then the transaction may be legal while still violating God’s heart.
Followers of Jesus are called to walk in truth.
Rather than hiding facts, we should lay everything before people honestly, trusting God to provide instead of relying on manipulation.
Don’t Build Your Success on Someone Else’s Loss
One of the sobering observations raised by this passage is how often society celebrates “getting the deal.”
People proudly talk about how much money they saved or how cleverly they negotiated.
But another question deserves asking:
How did the other person walk away from that transaction?
Were they helped?
Were they treated fairly?
Or were they simply outmaneuvered?
God’s wisdom calls believers to think differently.
Business should bless people whenever possible rather than intentionally leaving them worse off.
Modern Examples of Ill-Gotten Gain
The principles of Proverbs remain remarkably relevant.
Practices that can tempt people toward ill-gotten gain include:
- Predatory lending.
- Hidden contract provisions.
- Deceptive advertising.
- Manipulating vulnerable people.
- Taking advantage of widows, the elderly, or those in financial distress.
- Building wealth primarily through another person’s desperation.
The message also raises questions about government-sponsored lotteries.
When education or other public programs become funded through gambling losses, society begins depending upon the financial losses of countless people who often can least afford them.
Many purchase lottery tickets hoping their lives will improve, yet only a tiny fraction ever win while millions lose.
The concern is not merely gambling itself, but whether public benefit should be built upon widespread financial loss and false hope.
The larger principle remains consistent:
God does not delight in systems that prosper by encouraging others toward financial harm.
God Is Our Provider
One reason people pursue dishonest gain is fear.
They believe they must secure their future by whatever means necessary.
Scripture points us toward an entirely different foundation.
God is our Provider.
Everything we possess ultimately comes from Him.
Whether our income is large or small, our security rests in God’s faithfulness rather than our ability to outsmart others.
We may not always possess everything we desire, but we can live contentedly knowing God provides exactly what we need.
Honor God With Your Increase
Rather than chasing dishonest profit, believers are called to acknowledge God as the One who blesses the work of their hands.
The biblical principle of firstfruits reminds us that every increase comes from Him.
When we honor God first, we demonstrate our trust in His provision instead of trusting dishonest gain.
God’s blessing cannot be replaced by clever schemes.
His provision is always better than wealth obtained through compromise.
The Tragic End of Ill-Gotten Gain
Proverbs concludes with a sobering warning.
Those who seek dishonest wealth ultimately set traps for themselves.
What appears to be easy money eventually becomes destruction.
Solomon writes:
“Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the life of those who get it.” (Proverbs 1:19)
The very wealth they pursued becomes the instrument of their downfall.
God’s wisdom invites us to choose a different path.
One marked by honesty.
Integrity.
Transparency.
Compassion.
And unwavering trust that God is able to provide everything we truly need.
