Five Things We Will Learn
- God values faithfulness in ordinary moments.
- David’s greatness was formed while tending sheep.
- Contentment protects us from dissatisfaction and comparison.
- The lust of the eyes and flesh can make daily life feel like a prison.
- Today is a gift from God to be received with rejoicing.
Faithful in the Ordinary
God is often more pleased with our contentment and integrity in the mundane things of life than with the exciting moments we tend to celebrate. There is no foundation for great, God-given moments without faithfulness in the ordinary.
We are not failing, missing out, or insignificant because much of our lives is spent doing the everyday things God has placed before us.
Philippians 4:11 reminds us that contentment is learned in the place God has us.
David Was Chosen in the Sheep Pens
This is why David was chosen to lead God’s people. He was faithful in the mundane. He did not define himself by what he was doing, but by Who he was doing it for and by the relationship he maintained with God while carrying out those ordinary responsibilities.
Psalm 78:70-72 says:
“He chose David his servant
and took him from the sheep pens;
from tending the sheep he brought him
to be the shepherd of his people Jacob,
of Israel his inheritance.
And David shepherded them with integrity of heart;
with skillful hands he led them.”
David’s public leadership was rooted in private faithfulness. Before he shepherded Israel, he shepherded sheep. Before people saw him as a king, God saw him as faithful.
Don’t Underestimate the Value
of Contentment and Joy in Ordinary Life
The Culture of Never Enough
We live in a culture where people scroll from one dopamine-releasing moment to another, never satisfied, always looking for the next exciting experience.
Yet God has designed life differently. He gives us each day to enjoy His amazing creation, each night to behold the stars and rest. He gives us church families to pray for, care for, love, and serve. He gives us work to do and a way to provide for our families.
David had a job tending sheep, but he was not defined by his job. He was defined by how he handled it and by his faithfulness to God while doing it.

God Sees Faithfulness No One Else Notices
When we understand that God sees us, just as He saw David, we can relax and enjoy the mundane things in our lives. We can embrace the day-to-day, hour-to-hour, and week-to-week rhythms of life.
There is no clock ticking that says we are missing something. As believers, we live with eternity in view. In God’s eternal perspective, we are not falling behind. We are simply being called to be faithful today.
And it is often in that faithfulness, in the ordinary moments that no one else notices, that God prepares us for all He has ahead.
Lust Makes the Mundane Feel Like a Prison
Lust is defined as an insatiable appetite, never satisfied, always wanting more, and desiring what God has told us is not ours to have.
If we continually feed the never-satisfied “lust of the eyes” and “lust of the flesh,” we will never be content, and the mundane will feel like a prison to us.
1 John 2:16 says:
“For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but from the world.”
Consider stepping away from the scrolling, media, and relationships that stir dissatisfaction in your heart and mind, distracting you from the gift of today.
Receive Today as God’s Gift
Philippians 4:4 says:
“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!”
Psalm 118:24 says:
“This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
Choose to rejoice not in what you think today should be, nor in what you wish it would become, but in what it is and how God has created it to be.
Receive today as His gift, and find contentment in His presence, His purposes, and His provision.
