In an era where faith can often feel diluted by comfort and convenience, The Heavenly Man: The Remarkable True Story of Chinese Christian Brother Yun (2002) stands as a blazing torch, illuminating the raw power of unwavering obedience to Christ. This autobiography, penned by Brother Yun (Liu Zhenying) with Paul Hattaway, isn’t just a recounting of historical events—it’s a divine blueprint for living out the Great Commission amid adversity. Yun’s life, forged in the fires of persecution under China’s communist regime, inspires us to step beyond our safe harbors and boldly make disciples, as Jesus commanded in Matthew 28:19-20: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them… teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.”

From Despair to Divine Encounter

Born in 1958 into abject poverty in a rural village in Henan Province, Yun’s story begins with despair. His father lay dying from cancer, and the family had no resources for medical help. In a moment of desperation, Yun’s mother recalled fragments of the Gospel from her childhood and cried out to Jesus for healing. Miraculously, his father was restored to health overnight, igniting a spark of faith in the household.

At just 16, in 1974—during the height of the Cultural Revolution when Christianity was ruthlessly suppressed—Yun encountered Christ personally. He describes an overwhelming sense of God’s presence, leading him to commit his life to Jesus. But Yun’s hunger for truth didn’t stop there. Bibles were illegal and scarce, so he embarked on a 100-day fast and prayer vigil, memorizing the Lord’s Prayer as his only scriptural anchor. God answered dramatically: Through a vision, Yun was directed to a specific location where two evangelists, risking their lives, delivered a hidden Bible. This supernatural provision marked the beginning of Yun’s radical journey, reminding us that when we seek God with all our hearts, He equips us for the mission ahead.

Stepping Out in Obedience: Ministry and the Back to Jerusalem Vision

Compelled by an inner calling, Yun wasted no time. He began preaching the Gospel immediately, traveling on foot and by bicycle to villages where the name of Jesus was unknown. Despite his youth and lack of formal training, Yun united fragmented house churches, fostering a movement of simple, Spirit-led gatherings that emphasized prayer, Bible study, and evangelism.

A key vision from the book is the “Back to Jerusalem” initiative, which Yun championed—a bold plan for Chinese Christians to send missionaries westward along the ancient Silk Road, targeting unreached peoples in the 10/40 Window

The 10/40 Window refers to the geographic region between 10 and 40 degrees north of the equator, spanning North Africa, the Middle East, and much of Asia. Coined in 1990 by missionary strategist Luis Bush, it highlights the area with the highest concentrations of poverty, least access to the Gospel, and the largest populations adhering to Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and other non-Christian faiths. Home to over two-thirds of the world’s population and the majority of unreached people groups, this “Resistant Belt” represents the greatest challenge—and opportunity—for global missions today.

Yun’s ministry exploded; house churches multiplied rapidly, with millions coming to faith even as the government intensified its crackdown. His story challenges us: Are we content with Sunday services, or will we step out like Yun, discipling others in homes, workplaces, and beyond?

The Cost of Discipleship: Persecution and Miracles

Yet, Yun’s obedience came at a staggering cost. Arrested over 30 times, he endured horrific tortures detailed in the book—beatings with iron rods, electric shocks, starvation, and having his legs shattered by prison guards. In one infamous episode, Yun fasted for 74 days without food or water, sustained only by God’s grace, until he was on the brink of death.

Interwoven with his narrative are heartfelt accounts from his wife, Deling, who managed the family and faced her own interrogations during his absences. But amid the darkness, miracles abounded. Yun recounts visions of angels, divine healings, and prophetic words that guided him. The book’s climax is his 1997 escape from Zhengzhou Maximum Security Prison—a facility from which no one had ever fled. With broken legs, Yun claims God instantly healed him, opened locked doors, and rendered guards oblivious as he walked out in broad daylight. These accounts, while controversial to some, are presented as testimonies of God’s intervention, echoing biblical stories like Peter’s prison escape in Acts 12. Yun’s resilience teaches that persecution isn’t a deterrent but a catalyst for deeper faith and greater fruit.

Family Sacrifice and Lasting Legacy

The toll on Yun’s family was profound. Deling’s sections in the book reveal the emotional and practical struggles of raising children alone while Yun was imprisoned or on the run. Their story humanizes the cost of discipleship, yet it also showcases God’s faithfulness in reunion. After multiple escapes and a final flight from China, Yun sought asylum in Germany in 1997, where his family eventually joined him. From exile, he continued advocating for the persecuted church and the Back to Jerusalem movement, influencing global Christianity. By the book’s publication, China’s underground church had grown to an estimated 80-100 million believers, a testament to the multiplicative power of house church discipleship.

A Call to Action Today: Resources for Radical Obedience

Yun’s legacy isn’t confined to history—it’s a living call to action. His life exemplifies the true essence of the Great Commission: not institutional programs, but personal, Spirit-empowered obedience that multiplies disciples. For those inspired to follow suit, resources abound.

The Commands of Jesus Series at GregLancaster.org/CommandsOfJesus offers in-depth teachings on Jesus’ directives, from loving God and others to bearing fruit through evangelism and overcoming fear. Taught by Greg Lancaster, of Greg Lancaster Ministries, this series equips believers to live out Matthew 28:19-20, fostering courageous obedience and spiritual multiplication in everyday life.

Similarly, the Vine Fellowship Network (VineFellowshipNetwork.org) embodies Yun’s house church model in the modern West. This network of autonomous, Spirit-filled churches gathers in small, intimate groups of 5-20 people—much like Yun’s underground meetings—for heartfelt worship, shared meals, prayer, Bible study, and mutual care. Emphasizing the Great Commission, VFN Related Churches focus on loving God, loving others, and leading others to do the same, sending out disciples to reach their communities and beyond. Just as Yun’s movement thrived under persecution, VFN provides a relational framework for believers to walk out radical faith today, free from hierarchical structures and fueled by the Holy Spirit.

Igniting the Torch in Our Generation

In closing, The Heavenly Man isn’t merely a biography—it’s a divine summons. Brother Yun’s triumphs through trials remind us that the call of Christ demands everything but promises eternity. As Yun carried the Gospel torch through prisons and provinces, so must we ignite revival in our spheres. Engage with The Commands of Jesus Series, connect with the Vine Fellowship Network, and step out today. The harvest is plentiful; will you go and make disciples?
