Five Things We Will Learn
- Jesus directly confronts the church in Thyatira for tolerating false teaching.
- Revelation 2 connects sexual immorality with deception inside the church.
- Jesus warns that refusing to repent brings judgment, even upon those within the church.
- God’s mercy gives people time to repent, but that window is not unlimited.
- In the last days, deception can harden consciences until people call evil good.
Jesus’ Warning to the Church at Thyatira
Jesus teaches that remarrying after divorce is adultery. In the letter to the church of Thyatira, He confronts them for tolerating a false prophetess who was teaching sexual immorality.
In Revelation 2:20 (NIV 1984), Jesus says:
“Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols.”
This shows how seriously Jesus views false teaching that normalizes or excuses sexual immorality. The issue in Thyatira was not merely outward sin, but a church allowing deception to influence believers while still claiming spiritual authority.
A Call to Repentance
Jesus continues with a warning filled with both mercy and urgency:
“I have given her time to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling.”
Revelation 2:21 (NIV 1984)
The mercy of God is seen in the fact that He gives time to repent. Yet Jesus also makes clear that grace is not permission to continue in rebellion indefinitely.
Revelation 2:22 warns:
“So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways.”
Revelation 2:22 (NIV 1984)
Jesus is speaking directly to a church. This challenges the modern idea that someone can claim salvation while continuing in open rebellion against what Christ commands without repentance.
The Danger of Deception in the Last Days
The New Testament repeatedly warns that deception will increase in the last days. One of the greatest dangers is not merely immorality itself, but the redefining of immorality as righteousness.
Scripture warns that people can become hardened in conscience, eventually calling evil good and good evil. When conviction is repeatedly ignored, hearts can become spiritually numb.
This is why repentance matters so deeply. Conviction is a mercy from God. It is His kindness leading people back to truth before their conscience becomes seared and deception takes root.
Mercy Before Judgment
The message to Thyatira reveals both the mercy and holiness of Jesus. He gives time to repent. He warns before judgment. He speaks clearly so people can turn back while there is still time.
The call is not condemnation for those willing to repent. The call is to humility, honesty, and obedience before God.
Jesus still calls His church to purity, repentance, and truth.
